Akampene Island, more commonly known as Punishment Island, is a small, somber island on Lake Bunyonyi. It serves as a stark reminder of a past cultural practice. In the Bakiga culture, premarital pregnancy was considered a grave offense, bringing shame upon the family. Rather than face societal ostracization, these young women were abandoned on the island to die of starvation or drown. The intention was to deter other women from engaging in premarital sex. Sometimes, poorer men who couldn't afford a bride would rescue the women from the island, offering them marriage as a means of survival. Today, tourists can visit Akampene Island by boat. While landing on the island isn't encouraged out of respect for its history, boat tours circle the island, allowing visitors to hear the stories and reflect on the past. The experience is often combined with visits to other islands on Lake Bunyonyi, offering a broader understanding of the region's culture and history. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with the island itself, the surrounding area offers traditional Ugandan cuisine, including dishes made with matooke (plantain), beans, and groundnut stew.
Transportation
The primary mode of transportation to Punishment Island is by boat from the shores of Lake Bunyonyi. You can hire a motorized canoe or a traditional dugout canoe from various points around the lake, including near the towns of Kabale and Muko. Negotiate the price beforehand. Many lodges and guesthouses around the lake can arrange boat tours that include a visit to Akampene Island.
